Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

Fall is here, and that means winter is just around the corner! Make sure your home is ready for cold weather with our top 10 list of things you should do before the snow falls.

  1. Replace your HVAC air filter and have your heating system checked by a licensed contractor. There is nothing worse than a broken furnace during the coldest week of winter!
  2. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are working properly. Also replace batteries – experts recommend replacing batteries at least once a year.
  3. Clean your gutters, and repair or replace damaged gutters as necessary. If they’re clogged, you can end up with costly exterior damage and possible flooding inside.
  4. Shut off and drain all exterior faucets, and store hoses. This will help prevent water freezing and pipes bursting. If you have an irrigation system, remember to winterize it.
  5. Check and repair weather stripping around doors and windows. This is one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to keep heating costs down.
  6. Store outdoor furniture inside or cover it with a waterproof furniture cover to keep it in top shape for another summer season.
  7. Caulk or fill any cracks and gaps in the exterior where critters or water can get inside. Start from the foundation up and pay close attention to areas around dryer vents, cable entries and window wells.
  8. Fix any cracks in your driveway. When water gets into cracks, it freezes and expands, resulting in bigger cracks and potholes.
  9. Don’t forget a little landscaping TLC! Trim dead limbs, collect leaves, cut back perennials and fertilize your lawn.
  10. Last but not least, replace outdoor lightbulbs.
